Pretzel City Sports Newsflash More races the next two weekends then we have runners! TWO ARE THE EASIEST EASY AWARD EVENTS WE’VE EVER PUBLICIZED. Prereg price break for Ghouls and Fools Nighttime Trail Run ends after Tues Don’t forget; there WILL be a Third Thirsty

Racers & Rascals;

SO many races to discuss this week that I ran out of time to find the quality of jokes that you all deserve. They will return next week. In the meantime, laugh at Andy Reid when he says that Michael Vick is a Pro-bowl caliber quarterback. Also didn’t have time to proofread so who knows WHAT is in this summary!

1) SATURDAY: VERY, VERY busy day in racing. ALL OVER THE PLACE!!: COATESVILLE Hootenanny Hoedown 5k: trail 5k north of Unionville, PA Held by the same people that hold the excellent Stateline trail run in Kennett Square. Event is on a private estate and it will be the ONLY trail run held there ever, to date. BEAUTIFUL area! Full set of awards!. About 65 entries

FT INDIANTOWN GAP: 1 st year race. Combination of paved roads and trails. Right in the middle of things going on at the gap. Firing range nearby, helicopters flying overhead. Director has experience with the Give Thanks for Lebanon race so it should be well organized. About 70 entries

MANHEIM Bucket Brigade 5k: MEGA MEAG EASY AWARD RACE; less than 15 entries so far. nice countryside course right outside of town, Full set of awards. 2 nd

year for event so organization should be good. IF YOU DO NOT WIN AN AWARD HERE, DON’T PLAY THE LOTTERY THIS WEEKEND.

MILLLERSVILLE: Student Services Childhood Cancer 5k On Millersville U campus. Only $15 if postmarked by 9/24 Certified course!!! Good cause. Helps the 4 Diamonds Fund at PSU-Hershey. 60 entries so far

BOILING SPRINGS Diakon Trail Run 5k: listed on our site under “other runs” and then adventure/mudrun. Was initially supposed to be an adventure run, changed to a traditional trail run instead. At camp outside of town. Full free use of cool things at camp; zip lines, tower climbs, etc, after event. 150 entries so far.

EASTON: Tim Lambert 5k & 10K; this is a race of “twos”. Two distances, course goes thru two states, TOO much fun. Have fun going home and telling people you ran to NJ and back. Parts of race along pretty riverfront. Expect about 135 in the 5k, 50 in the 10k

ALLENTOWN: Bruisers 5k Run for Canine Cancer: Really neat event in its 3rd or 4th year, along the Lehigh Parkway. Has a special distance and course for those with dogs, and lots of dog ‘swag” . The main event is a standard run along that beautiful 5k course. NICELY organized. Normally draws between 125-150 entries

SCHWENKSVILLE Rich Berardi Memorial 5k: Rolling course through the township. 1 st time race, dedicated to local firefighter. 3K walk as well. So far, they are attracting a decent crowd. Will have close 200 entries

BLUE BELL H5K Charity 5k: on Montgomery Co Community College Campus, 3 rd

annual. Great raffle along with race. Course totally contained on campus. Normally gets 100-150 entries. Full set of awards but only 60 entries so far

PENNSAUKEN, NJ: Elks 5k MEGA, MEGA EASY AWARD; less than 15 entries so far which makes NO sense because this course is FAST & FLAT!! Takes place at stadium in Cooper River Park. Early start. HERE TOO, IF YOU DON;T WIN AN AWARD, DON;T TRY SKYDIVING FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS WEEKEND.

2) SUNDAY: Some nice road races:

NEW BRITAIN/CHALFONT New Britain Twp/First Trust 5k: this race suffered last year because there was a 5k the exact same day and time just 2 miles away. From what my crew said, they did a NICE job. Well worth checking out. Uses North Branch Park. Still may be a SEMI-EASY-AWARD event.

BLUE BELL Women’s Center End Domestic Violence 5k: 2 nd event on Montco CC campus in 2 days. Event held last year so should be well organized. Rolling course on campus. TRADITIONALLY, AN EASY AWARD EVENT!

READING Michael Wise 5k: maybe Reading’s flattest course. Uses the exact same course as the RACC Run in April so you can see if you improved this season or not. Special awards for law enforcement members. All activities now take place under library. About 90 entries so far

PHILADELPHIA Penn IOA 5k: On the streets around U of P Hospital and the U of P campus. Fairly flat area and a unique course for the Philly area. Expect about 250-350 entries. 1 st time ever but it should be a GOOD one!

3) GHOULS AND FOOLS NIGHTTIME PRICE BREAK ENDS THIS TUES!!: With the Third Thirsty Thursday now adding a Nighttime edition for Oct, it’s easy to forget the OTHER nighttime run that week; the Ghouls and Fools! This Halloween-oriented trail run uses some of Reading’s easiest courses and you’ll laugh your cheeks off when you see how some of the people dress to run. Plus, we’ll have items to pick up along the way that will get you a door prize if carried to the finish. The artwork for the shirt is ALWAYS interesting so be SURE to save bucks and get one by getting your entry in by mail or online at, ’cause once midnight strikes on Tues, the entry fee will rise to a MONSTEROUS amount!

4) NEXT SATURDAY: Welcome to the busiest racing weekend of 2012, starting with an outrageous schedule on Sat. Going from East to West, let’s see what we have:

Doylestown, PA George Casey Memorial 5k: Race starting in downtown Doylestown. In remembrance of a lifetime area police officer & volunteer firefighter. Most of the course from this starting area are fairly flat, with only one or two hills at

Horsham, PA Camper Scamper 5k Trail Run: they are calling this an entry level trail run but I suspect that it’s closer to cross country. Gives a long sleeved T, has full set of awards, LOTYS of sponsors so there may be some great SWAG here. Full set of awards.

North Wales, PA Upper Gwynedd Fire Co 5k: Race has a North Wales address but it may actually be closer to West Point. Full set of awards, course is wheel measured and it’s not real hilly in that area.

Philadelphia, PA West Mt Airy 5 Miler: New race thru one of the prettier sections of Northwest Philly. 5 miler, which are getting harder to find. Should be a real nice

LATE AFTERNOON! Philadelphia, PA Rest in Peace 5k: A race that should be in EVERY single person’s bucket list. The entire race takes place in the cemetery in East Falls where broadcaster Harry Kalas is buried. VERY unique; great party afterwards. MANY run in GREAT costumes but it is not a requirement. Last year, we finished next to the head stone for Adrienne Balboa that was a prop from one of the Rocky movies. At least, they SAID that no one was buried there!

Collegeville, PA I Can Run 5k: VERY festive 5k at the Pfizer facility just off the Rt 422 exit at Collegeville. LOTS of door prizes, food, etc. Course is totally on Pfizer campus; no traffic! Gets anywhere from 300-500 people each year.

Boyertown, PA Trestle 5k Run (was Community Days race): Held just outside of Boyertown, in Douglass Twp. Lots of awards and some younger age groups than most. Roads closed to traffic during race. SWEET!

Center Valley, PA Tri the Bi Kids Bike & Run Duathlon: REALLY sweet event for kids up to 12 th grade. 3 waves based on age and 3 sets of awards. Bike is NOT very long and the entire course, I think, stays on the school grounds. Directed by the same very competent person that directs the Coopersburg 5k

Allentown, PA Step Out 5k Against Domestic Violence: Race held on the Lehigh Parkway. Full set of awards. Race has been held in the past so it should be well organized. VERY pretty place to run. Later start than many races; 10:15. Sleep in!

Leesport, PA Following the Footsteps 5k: 3 rd year for the race but the first where it’s being professionally timed. We’ve also provide consulting services so the race is even better than before. Mix of grass and pavement. At Schuylkill Valley High

Lititz, PA Hartz Physical Therapy Fall 5k: Wonderful small town event that gets between 250-300 runners. Wheel measured course; I measured it myself! NICE folks, WELL organized

Rutherford (near Harrisburg) Run Your Can Off 5k: IN community just adjacent to Harrisburg. Has very unusual age group categories; may lead to you winning an award for one. Entertainment, raffles, etc.

Mechanicsburg, PA Bruce Hansen Memorial Chicken Run 5k: named after an avid cartoonist, now deceased, who once lived in Mechanicsburg and who’s signature “logo” was a drawn chicken. Looks like a fun race, At Soldiers and Sailors Park.

5) NEXT SUNDAY: As Dick Clark used to say, the hits keep coming:

Reading, PA Kyle Pagerly Memorial 5k: 2 nd year for this race that remembers our buddy Kyle; he is truly missed. Funds help his widow and child who was not yet born when he was killed in duty. Chip timing by Pretzel City Sports. Actually in Shillington, a burb of Reading. LETS GET THESE RACE ENTRIES UP TO THE 600-700 person level it had last year. The need is still there and it’s too son to let his memory fade.

Harrisburg, PA Colonial Park Fire Co 5k: A nice 2 nd year race in the northeast section of Harrisburg. Slightly rolling but nothing too bad. Held in conjunction with their open house; stick around and “see how they roll”. LOTS of awards.

AFTERNOON: Harrisburg, PA Kids Chance 5k & 10k: Two VERY flat course starting at City Island and running along the backs of the Susquehanna. Always a scenic event. Organization holds 2 events every year, one in Phila and one in Harrisburg, so the organization should be quite good.

Hershey, PA 4 Diamonds 5k: Group of between 300-600 runners and walkers expected for this event. Past ones have been VERY festive and well organized/Course changed to make it flatter in 2012

Downingtown, PA Run for Sight 5k & 15k Trail Runs at Marsh Creek: Cool trail runs on the back side of the lake at Marsh Creek, north of Downingtown. BEAUTIFUL area, 15k is ESPECIALLY scenic, 5k is a good course for trying a trail run for the first

Perkasie, PA Merry Go Round 5k held by Grandview Hospital: Race held before, so expect it to be well organized. They are considering a course change that will make it even faster. Well supported with food, awards, etc

Allentown, PA Upper Macungie Twp 5k: Amazingly, a race close to Allentown that is NOT on the parkway. Helps fund the parks in nearby Upper Macungie Township. Roads and pathways, very few rises or falls. Full set of awards
